Around the end of December I noticed that a special called Wives With Beehives is going to be on TLC. There’s no plot blurb but with a title like that I’m guaranteed to like it, so I record it. It’s about 4 women who “live vintage” - a hardcore adherence to 1950s style. You know I love dedication to a theme, so I settled in for an hour of retro weirdos
I’d say at about ten minutes in, I was just disgusted with everyone involved. All the women (with the exception of Shelby) were outrageously rude to everyone they met, and also treated each other like shit. Like Mean Girls but a bunch of middle aged women trying to out-rockabilly each other. It was really sad. It made me grateful that none of my lady friends are stupid assholes
Gotta admit though: they did have some great hair/clothing/home decor. This lady had the biggest poof BUT she had a hairstylist do it so, meh. I was also bummed they never tried to confront the women about the dark side of the 1950s in America, like racism? Are you girls into segregation too? Nobody ever asks them though
I think it was a one-off special and I don’t know if it’s going to play again on TLC, but if they do, I recommend watching it with the sound off. You won’t miss anything

I watch television programs off the DVR so I can skip commercials but she caught my eye even in 4x fast forward. Next week on Sister Wives some of the Brown kids have a conversation with other kids that are very opposed to polygamy, including this scene queen who gets aggro with Mariah and the other girls. I guess you can get them out of polygamy but you can’t take away their hairspray
To me it looks very Soccer Mom multiplied by Flock of Seagulls but I am too old for this “emo” shit anymore (I stopped at like, The Promise Ring)
